It all started when…
Founded in 1981, First Presbyterian Christian School has provided a quality early childhood education in the heart of Spokane for twenty-five years. The school initially opened under the guidance of Jeanne Walsh. In the early years, classes were offered for three- and four-year-olds, three days a week, and quickly progressed to fives and ultimately Kindergarten, with Sandy Mansfield. Mrs. Mansfield served as kindergarten teacher for 18 years, was named Teacher of the Year in 2001. She retired in 2004. In 1993, Phyllis Schaffer became the director. Mrs. Schaffer served First Presbyterian for fifteen years, with twelve years as director. During that time the school continued to search out and provide the best early childhood teaching techniques, with an emphasis on “hands-on” activities that appealed to all learning styles. Mrs. Schaffer discovered that this was her true passion and she especially enjoyed establishing a loving connection with the children and families at the school. That focus continues to be central to the First Presbyterian experience. Mrs. Schaffer retired in 2005 and Mary Davey became the director for the next few years.
In the fall of 2008, Tracy Blue assumed the role of principal of the school. Tracy grew up at First Presbyterian Church and participated with her daughters as they enjoyed wonderful years of preschool and kindergarten at FPCS. She was on the church staff as the Children’s Ministry Director for five years when her children were young. After spending nine years as a classroom teacher in grades K-3 and four years as a staff developer in literacy and math with District 81, she decided to come home to First Presbyterian where she could blend her love of teaching children with her faith in Christ. She completed her Masters in Education at Lesley University and her Administrator Certificate at Eastern Washington University. Tracy loves working with such a wonderful staff and looks forward to continuing to be a part of the school as it grows in the coming years.
First Presbyterian Christian School has been a Washington State Approved Private school since 2009 and has since added elementary classes up through sixth grade.
